A new leaf ritual to honor your intentions during this seasonal shift.
What are you doing for the fall equinox?
I like to create a little altar to accompany seasonal transitions. Nature is shedding what it no longer needs and turning over a new 🍂 leaf. I like to honor and focus that with intention.
I searched online for simple autumn equinox altars, and the images were either bleak or Martha Stewart pumpkin spice. I decided to "altar" my expectations a bit and let go of rules. Yes, this is a time of symmetry between dark and light, but nothing in nature is completely symmetrical or balanced. We still manage to not fall down most of the time.

5 Journal Questions To Focus Your Autumn Equinox Intentions
Your altar should above all else be meaningful to you, so take a moment to hone in on your inner truth. If you want to get out your journal, please do.
Ask yourself a few questions:
- How do you want to feel this season?
- What will you harvest?
- What can you shed?
- Where in your life do you see balance between dark and light?
- What's most important this season?
Make Your Own Autumn Equinox Altar
Where will your equinox altar live?
Set the stage. If you're representing light with a candle, or adding anything fragile or toxic, ensure safety above all else. In NYC, we don't have a lot of space, so my altar is often on a windowsill. Do you have a side table, shelf, or alcove? Will it be temporary? Will it evolve throughout the season?
What will you gather for your equinox altar?
Here are a few ideas, but please conjure your own...
Think nature and symmetry, dark and light in balance for the equinox. Start by representing every element: earth, air, fire, water, ether (or metal or wood depending on the tradition).
Gather something that holds the wisdom of the past, like an ancestor’s necklace; the potential of the future, like an unfinished poem; and consider what grounds you in the present moment.
Maybe something harvested from your garden, an herb or spice?
What will you leave off your altar?
Like gardening, creativity is as much about culling as it is about bounty. Be discerning and allow negative space to represent a spacious, uncluttered mind.
Sit with your altar, weave it into your established rituals, enjoy the sensory experience of it.
